At a glance
The short version
What we liked
- The most polished, most intuitive team chat in the category
- Huge integration directory: your other tools almost certainly connect
- A real free tier your team can start on today
- AI summaries and search now included on paid tiers
Where it falls short
- Not yet hands-on tested by us, research based for now
- Free tier hides messages after 90 days and caps you at ten apps
- US$7.25 to US$15 per user per month adds up fast for a small team
- Singapore data residency exists, but only on Enterprise Grid, not the tiers an SMB buys
Bottom line Slack is the best tool ever built for the specific job of team chat, and if your business runs on conversations and integrations it earns its keep. For a typical SG or MY small team the honest maths is harsher: ten people on Pro cost about US$870 a year for chat alone, while Lark gives twenty people chat, docs, video calls and spreadsheets for nothing, and Google Workspace bundles email and docs for similar money. Buy Slack deliberately, not by default.
The verdict
What Slack is, and who it is for
Slack made team chat a product category, and after more than a decade under Salesforce it is still the reference implementation: channels, threads, huge emoji culture, and an integration directory that connects to nearly everything a business runs. Its documented setup is simple enough that teams routinely adopt it without anyone being told to. On the craft of chat itself, nothing here beats it.
The free tier is genuinely usable and genuinely limited: 90 days of message history and ten app integrations. The history limit is the one that bites, because a team that has lived in Slack for six months has its institutional memory held behind the paywall. That is the moment Slack converts you, and it is worth knowing before you move the whole company in. Paid plans, verified against Slack’s Singapore pricing page in July 2026, run US$7.25 per user per month for Pro and US$15 for Business+ on annual billing (US$8.75 and US$18 monthly), in US dollars.
The regional wrinkles are small but real. Billing is in USD, not SGD or ringgit. Slack launched Singapore data residency in 2026, which sounds like a local win until you read the tier list: it is Enterprise Grid only, so the Pro and Business+ plans an actual SMB buys keep data in Slack’s default regions. Salesforce is also rolling AI features through the paid tiers in 2026, with summaries and AI search on Pro and a fuller assistant on Business+.
Who should buy it? A services firm, agency or tech team whose work is genuinely conversational, that already pays for email somewhere else, and whose tools need to talk to each other. Who should pause? A cost-sensitive team buying its first collaboration stack, because at ten to twenty people the per-head maths against Lark’s free tier and Google Workspace’s bundle is not close. This is our research based read; we will confirm it hands-on and update the review.
Pricing
What Slack actually costs
Verified against Slack’s Singapore pricing page, July 2026. Billed in US dollars everywhere in this region.
| Plan | Annual billing | Monthly billing | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | US$0 | US$0 | 90 days of message history, ten app integrations, 1:1 calls. |
| ProMost SMBs | US$7.25/user/mo | US$8.75/user/mo | Unlimited history, unlimited apps, group meetings, AI summaries and search. |
| Business+ | US$15/user/mo | US$18/user/mo | Advanced AI assistant, SSO and compliance features most SMBs will not use. |
| Enterprise+ | Custom | Custom | Enterprise Grid. This is also the only tier with Singapore data residency. |
The plan most small teams should price is Pro. The honest arithmetic: a ten-person team pays about US$870 a year, roughly S$1,200, for chat. That is fair value if conversations and integrations are how your business runs, and hard to defend if chat is just where people paste files. The free tier is a real trial, not a home: the 90-day history limit means your searchable company memory quietly expires until you pay.
