At a glance
The short version
What we liked
- Cleanest day-to-day workflow in its class
- Native GST returns, InvoiceNow ready via Peppol
- Unlimited users on every plan
- Strong bank reconciliation and bank rules
- Large local and global app ecosystem
Where it falls short
- Pricier entry than Wave or Zoho Books
- Starter plan invoice and bill caps are tight
- Payroll is an add-on, not native, in SG and MY
- Live phone support is limited
Bottom line If your business files GST or SST and you want the calmest daily accounting workflow with e-invoicing already sorted, Xero is the safest pick on this site. Choose Wave if you need free, or Zoho Books if you already run the Zoho suite.
The verdict
What Xero is, and who it is for
Xero is a cloud accounting platform built for small and medium businesses that would rather not think about accounting. You invoice, you reconcile the bank, you file GST, and you hand a clean set of books to your accountant. It is the tool that most bookkeepers in Singapore and Malaysia will happily work in, which matters more than any feature checkbox once you outgrow doing the books yourself.
The pitch is calm. The interface does less shouting than QuickBooks, the bank reconciliation is built to learn your recurring transactions, and the things a local business trips over, GST returns and now IRAS InvoiceNow, are built in rather than bolted on. On the Standard plan the documented workflow covers a full month of invoicing, reconciliation and a GST F5 return without a workaround. This is our research based read; we will confirm the detail with a hands-on test and update the review.
It is not the cheapest way to keep books. Wave is free and Zoho Books starts lower, and if you already live inside another software suite the maths can change. But for a GST or SST registered business that wants one dependable system its accountant already knows, Xero is the one to beat. That is why it sits at the top of our accounting roundup.
Scorecard
Why the score lands at 8.7
We grade every accounting tool on the same five criteria, each out of 10, then weight them toward what an SME actually feels day to day: ease of use and local compliance count for more than raw feature depth. This is a research based score, drawn from Xero's documentation, pricing and the wider body of user feedback; the five marks sit in the scorecard at the top of this page, and here is what moves them.
Two criteria shape the verdict. GST, SST and e-invoicing is the high mark at 9.2, because filing a GST F5 and connecting to InvoiceNow through Peppol are both native rather than bolted on, which is rare in this category. Value for money is the low mark at 7.8: Xero is not expensive so much as firmly priced, and the Starter plan's invoice caps quietly push most buyers up to Standard.
The middle three, ease of use, reporting depth, and the support and app ecosystem, all land in the high 8s. Nothing there reads as a weakness, and Xero's reputation for a calm daily workflow is consistent enough across user accounts to hold the mark, which is why the overall settles at 8.7 rather than lower. We will confirm these marks hands-on and re-date the review when we do.
Pricing
Xero plans in Singapore
Prices are per month before 9 percent GST, for the Singapore region. Every plan includes unlimited users, which is unusual in this category.
| Plan | Price | Invoices & bills | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | S$32/mo | 20 invoices, 5 bills a month | Freelancers and very small shops with low volume |
| StandardOur pick | S$65/mo | Unlimited, plus bulk reconcile | Most SG and MY SMEs filing GST or SST |
| Premium | S$85/mo | Unlimited, plus multi-currency | Import, export and anyone billing in several currencies |
The honest read: most businesses will land on Standard. Starter looks cheap until the 20 invoice cap bites, and the jump to Standard is where Xero becomes comfortable. Premium only earns its keep if you deal in foreign currency.

How we assessed this
What this score is based on
This is a research based review, not a hands-on test yet. The score and every observation here are drawn from Xero's own documentation and Singapore pricing, its published feature list for the SG and MY editions, and the aggregated picture from independent user feedback. Where a claim depends on how something behaves in daily use, we have said so rather than implied we watched it happen.
A hands-on test of Xero is on our list. When we run it, we will create a real account, work the core flows a business runs, an invoice, a reconciliation, a GST F5 return and the InvoiceNow connection, and update this review with a tested badge, the plan and month we ran it, and anything the hands-on run changes. Until then the badge you see is Research based, and it means exactly that. Read our full testing methodology for how the two states differ.
